THERE was only a small contingent of English Leicesters paraded before judge David Jackson, Jackson Farming Border Leicester and Poll Dorsets, Moyston, but that didn’t detract from the quality on display.
“There is strength here,” he said.
Showing all the characteristics the English Leicester is known for, the supreme exhibit in the breed was awarded to the two and half year old ewe bred by Colin Taylor, Koenarl stud, Timboon.
“I really like this ewe, she has a tremendous fleece, with a lot of length of staple and lustre,” Mr Jackson said.
“She has done everything a ewe should do, is well grown and is in lamb again.
“This is the type of wool the breed is known for.”
Colin Taylor was also successful in exhibiting the champion ram with his 10 month old December-shorn sire prospect.
The reserve champion ram was awarded to Nick and Vanessa Wootton, Upland stud, “Binbarra”, Main Ridge. Reserve grand champion ewe was awarded to Colin Taylor, Koenarl stud, Timboon, who was also successful in exhibiting the Best Woolled sheep.
Nick and Vanessa Wootton, Upland stud, Main Ridge exhibited the sheep with Best Hindquarter.
“There is a lot of depth and correctness of shape about this sheep, and is particularly strong over the hindquarter,” Mr Jackson said.
