THE Andrew’s Labor government has announced a new round of Young Farmer Scholarships, to help support young people in the agriculture industry.
Up to $10,000 will be granted to 10-15 young farmers aged 35 or under, to assist with their development and career progression.
The funding consists of up to $5,000 towards study, and a further $5,000 to invest on-farm, or in professional development activities to help put new skills into practice.
Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford said by supporting young people in agriculture, the industry is destined to grow.
“By supporting the development of young farmers, we are investing not just in the growth of the agriculture sector, but in the future of regional Victoria,” Ms Pulford said.
Lauren Peterson, Cobden, was a scholarship recipient in November, 2015, and said it helped her gain contacts in the industry.
“Not only did it give me the education in terms of knowledge and skills to build on, but it’s also given me the opportunity to have confidence and to reach out and ask questions,” Ms Peterson said.
“You meet a lot of people along the way, and that’s been the biggest benefit.”
Applications are open until Wednesday, August 30, 2017.
