Australia’s 2017 winter crop production is expected to fall by a third in 2017 on a return to average yields, according to the June update of the ABARES Australian Crop Report.
National winter crop production is forecast to fall to around 40.1 million tonnes from the record large 59.4 million tonnes in 2016, ABARES said. Australian 2017 wheat production is forecast at 24.2 million tonnes, down from last year’s 35.1 million tonnes and barley production is projected to fall to 8.1 million tonnes, down from last year’s harvest of 13.4 million tonnes. Canola production was forecast at 3.3 million tonnes compared to last year’s 4.1 million tonnes, according to the report.
Above average rainfall and average rainfall in May boosted Victoria’s winter crop prospects, ABARES said in the report.
