After many store sales offering over 2500 head this year, supply at this fortnightly store cattle market finally dipped.
Agents offered another mixed quality yarding comprising of 1534 head, but potential buyers did have some quality lines to purchase.
Very happy with their sale two weeks ago, J&A Blackshaw, Leongatha South, sold another 110 yearling Angus steers. Strong support from feedlots saw their 110 steers sell to $1760, to average a very healthy $1647.
Teys-Cargill were a major contributor here, buying many of these yearling steers for their Charlton feedlot. Thomas Foods International were a lot quieter as it would appear they have enough cattle on feed for the moment.
Equaling the sale’s top price of $1760 was GA&BL Morrison for their 20 Angus steers. Tazach Trading Pty Ltd, Woolamai, sold 29 Angus steers from $1660-$1730.
Demand remained strong for light and medium weight steers, which saw prices range mostly between $950&$1300. Clover Cottage, French Island, sold 10 British White steers for $1290. Lighter still in weight was the 41 Angus steers of Pilkington & Toohey, Waratah Bay, which sold from $1030-$1170.
A range of dairy and dairy cross steers sold from $350-$950 with numerous pens offered, again this sale.
Heifers made up about 30pc of the total yarding, and these too were mixed in age, weight, and quality. Yearling heifers sold mostly from $1000-$1430 with Tazach Holdings P/L selling 21 heifers from $1320 to the top price.
D&P Whitely, Mirboo, sold 42 heifers between $1180&$1315. The 43 light weight Angus heifers of Pilkington & Toohey, sold from $750-$790.
Heifers of varying age and condition did sell from a base price of $630, giving many a chance to buy. L&B Bastin, Tyers, sold 10 younger heifers for $1010.
A small selection of 44 cows and calves sold according to their quality. R Crouch, Welshpool, sold 6 head for the top price of $2000.
JD&AN Larkins, Krowera, 9 outfits for $1890, and SB Marriott Livestock, Outtrim, 6 cows and calves for $1775.
Agents were pleased with the results, possibly driven by the promise of weekend rain.
