Inspired by an almost perfect start to the Autumn growing season, local southwest restockers have competed keenly for a broad range of store cattle at Warrnambool saleyards on Friday.
Competing for a smaller yarding of 1600 – down 1000 head on the previous month – heavy steers offered in the 360 to 450kg weight range attracted strong feeder inquiry to make $1340 to $1640 per head or an average of 370 cents per kilogram.
Local buying along with the support of a Riverina, NSW order claimed almost the entire range of lighter steers as those penned in the 280 to 360kg weight range made $1140- $1400/head, average 389c/kg, and unweighed lots, $1140-$1310 per head for an estimated sale price of 450c/kg.
Heifer sales were also keenly contested making $980-$1568 or 360-365c/kg for those offered weighed in the 280-450kg weight range.
