Leongatha agents offered only a small yarding of 750 head, which sold to strong competition, despite a mixed quality offering.
There was strong demand for a line of 81 Angus-Friesian cows, with the 3rd and 4th Black Simmental calf at foot. Drafted into suitable, smaller lots, these cows and calves, sold by SB Marriott, due to a property sale, made from $2325-$2700. G&G Bland, Yarram, sold 35 Hereford-Friesian and Angus-Friesian cows, PTIC to Angus bulls for April/May calving, from $1070-$1510.
Mixed results were achieved as buyers chose youth over age. A single Angus steer, 545 kilograms liveweight, offered by Kennington Park, Meeniyan, sold for $1500, but their yearling steers, 403kgs, sold for $1510. Also selling at the higher price was six South Devon steers, 455kgs, of K&S Hutchinson, Yinnar.
A large selection of Friesian and crossbred steers sold to fair-good competition. Prices ranged from $450-$1500.
However, the strength of competition was for the younger steers, which sold mostly from $1190-$1480. Jones&Fleming, Rosedale, sold 19 Angus-Hereford & Hereford steers from $1440-$1480.
R&V Dowell, Leongatha, sold their last draft of 2016 drop Hereford steers from $1180-$1300. G&F Derham, Flynn, sold 10 Hereford steers for $1360. J&S Kelly, Korumburra, sold 14 young Angus steer calves for $1060, which was estimated to equal 460c/kg lwt.
Heifers, being in short supply, sold very well. J Supple, Mirboo North, sold 4 yearling Hereford heifers for $1480, while other yearling heifers sold between $1120 and $1370. Red Angus heifers offered by Campaspe Flats, Berry’s Creek, sold from $1140-$1370. Younger heifers sold from $740-$1140.
