NUNNIONG HEREFORDS
*25 of 39 bulls sold to $10,000, av $4040
NUNNIONG Hereford stud principal Philip “Bluey” Commins saw his faith in the Ivory bloodline justified, with bidders keen to take home bulls from this sire at last week’s sale.
Lot 4, Nunniong Ivory L63, topped the sale, bought at $10,000 by Alan Mitchell, of Alan and Leanne Mitchell, Powlett Downs, Wonthaggi. They run a 500-head, self-replacing, Hereford herd and grow steers and heifers out for a grass-fed program.
Mr Mitchell said the rising two-year-old bull by Battalion Ivory was “...the pick of the bulls”. He said he’d join the bull to mid-age cows.
Mr Commins was pleased to see the interest in the Ivory genetics: “The Ivory bulls have been overlooked in the past; an Ivory bull over heifers throws a small calf that grows out well...”
Lot 4 was the heaviest bull in the draft, at 738 kilograms.
Other Nunniong-bred Ivory-bloodline bulls were bought by H&P Bila of Dargo, Michelle Murphy of Swifts Creek and Alan and Noeleen Smith, Innisfail, Omeo.
The Static and Bra-Ma bloodlines were also popular. Lot 42, Nunniong Bra-Ma L111, was sold for $6000 to Graeme Pendergast, AG&SM Pendergast, Benambra. The 650kg bull had EBVs of milk +9kg and 200-, 400- and 600-day weights of +28kg, +49kg and +75kg. Mr Pendergast also bought Lot 28.
Elders and Landmark conducted the sale.
