YANCOWINNA ANGUS
*30 of 36 bulls sold to $10,500, av $4983
FRIDAY’S Yancowinna Angus bull sale attracted 30 registered buyers, and sold 30 of 36 of the 18-20 month-old bulls to an average of $4983, up almost $600 on the last year’s autumn sale.
The top price was for lot 3 Yancowinna L96 sold to repeat buyer Bill Belfrage, Bass, for $10,500, who also bought lot 6 for $4500.
L97, sired by Sydgen Black Pearl, at 18 months weighed 616 kilograms, and had well-balanced estimated breeding values (EBVs), including an eye muscle area of +6.4 square centimetres, birthweight of +2.1kg and the highest domestic index figure of $120.
Mr Belfrage runs 250 Angus self-replacing breeders and has bought bulls at this sale for the past five years.
The second top price was Lot 5 Yancowinna L133 sold for $7500 to Damian Moore, Yarram.
A son of Coolana New Day H36, he carried excellent EBVs of +5.8 for birth weight, +49 for 200-day weight, +89 for 400-day weight, +119 for 600-day weight, +7.7 for eye muscle area and +1.5 for intramuscular fat.
Mr Moore also bought lot 9, the heaviest bull in the catalogue at 680kg, purchased for $4000.
The bulls will be used in their Hereford/Angus herd.
Another Sydgen Black Pearl son to sell well was lot 23 bought by R & C Donat, Mardan, for $7000, and again carried excellent domestic index figures of $117.
Volume buyer Robert Chalmers, Leongatha South, purchased three bulls to a top of $6500, av $4800.
In post-sale discussion with auctioneer Michael Glasser, he felt that whilst the later part of the sale may have lacked buying support, with six bulls being passed in, the recent high bull sale clearances will lead to scarcity of quality back up bulls and will mean any remaining bulls quickly find a home.
The sale was conducted by SEJ Leongatha and Michael Glasser GTSM the auctioneer.
