QUARTER-WAY ANGUS
*Total clearance of 41, sold to $9000, av $6049
THE Hall family’s Quarter-Way Angus stud, Scottsdale, Tasmania, achieved a full clearance of 41 bulls offered on Monday.
Principal Trevor Hall said they offered and sold more bulls than last year, and the average was up by about $1800. The sale topped at $9000, which Bev Hanlon, Hanlon & Whitchurch, paid for Lot 5, Quarter-Way Lennon L66 (AI) (TW). This May 2015-drop bull weighed 768kg; had a scrotal circumference of 41.5cm; and an eye muscle area (EMA) of 101sqcm. The bull will go into a commercial operation at Bridport, Tas.
Lennon L66 was one of 20 sons of New Zealand bull Merchiston Generate 243 in the sale catalogue. Mr Hall said these were the first Merchiston Generate sons to be sold in Tas. He said the family was impressed by the strong cow herd when they visited Merchiston in the North Island, after first seeing them at the World Angus Forum.
Mr Hall said Lennon’s dam, Quarter-Way Frannie F49, was one of the best cows ever bred at the Quarter-Way stud. The joining produced a bull with conformity and growth, backed up by its estimated breeding values (EBVs) of +46kg for 200-day weight, +86kg for 400-day weight and +114kg for 600-day weight.
Two bulls reached the equal second highest price – Lot 1 Quarter-Way Lamont L6 (AI) and Lot 8 Quarter-Way Latham L19, which were sold to Lowly Pastoral and DW&VJ Grace, Flinders Island, respectively.
Lot 2, Quarter-Way Landon L11 (AI) – which along with lot 1 was by another NZ sire Cricklewood Cracker 399, was knocked down to Jason Faulkner for $8250.
Two more Merchiston Generate sons sold for $8000; one to each of IF&V Abraham and Telita Dairy. The Abraham family purchased the most bulls at three and their draft averaged $7583.
Mr Hall said most buyers were return clients and there were some new faces. Of these, most are local producers, with some from Flinders Island and Victoria.
