GLENDAN PARK HEREFORDS
*31 of 32 bulls sold to $16,000, av $6952
GLENDAN Park Hereford stud, Barfold, has continued the trend of improved top and average prices at its fourth on-property bull sale.
Lot 8, Glendan Park Lancefield L037 (AI) (P) topped the sale at $16,000, which was $7000 up on last year’s sale high.
Llandillo Poll Herefords, The Lagoon (south of Bathurst), NSW, purchased the 930-kilogram son of NJW 73S W18 Hometown 10Y (IMP US) (P). The early April 2015-drop bull was out of a Glendan Park Jessie cow.
The sale-topper’s estimated breeding values (EBVs) included +71kg for 400-day weight – which put it in the top one per cent.
Its EBVs are also in the top 5pc for 200-day weight (at +42kg), 600-day weight (at +97kg), milk (at +22kg), scrotal size (at +2.9 centimetres) and carcase weight (at +67kg); and in the top 10pc for mature cow weight (+81kg) and eye muscle area (+4.8 square cm).
These balanced figures combined to have high price index values, including Supermarket +$113, Grass Fed Steer +$106, Grain Fed Steer +$120 and EU +123.
Another of the US sire Hometown’s sons was knocked down to Morganvale Poll Herefords, Keith, SA, for the equal second highest price of $14,000. It weighed 900kg at 23 months of age.
Glendan Park thought so much of this and the top-priced bull that they retained 50 straws of semen from them to use within the herd.
In fact, this American outcross sire, which the stud’s team said was breeding Glendan Park thick, soft cattle with great carcase and performance data, had five sons in the sale that averaged $10,500.
Also at this equal second highest price price was Glendan Park Lawson L139 (H), a Warringa Google G23 (H) son, which Glendan Park bought privately for $10,000 in 2013.
This 910kg, late May 2015-drop bull was secured by Maree Paton, Tallangatta.
This bull was the full brother to the senior champion bull at the Wodonga National 2016, and had EBVs in the top 1pc for 600-day weight (at +103kg); and top 5pc for 200-day weight (at +40kg), 400-day weight (+69kg), mature cow weight (at +100kg), milk (at +20kg), scrotal size (+3cm) and carcase weight (+65kg).
Long-time supporters Neville, Alison and David McClure, Mooree Partnership, near Harrow, purchased the most Glendan Park bulls, at four.
Their draft included four bulls including Glendan Park Levi L145 (H), another Warringa Google son, for $13,000. Their four Hereford bulls averaged $7250. They also purchased Angus bulls for the first time.
The McClure family joins about 1400 traditional Hereford cows and son David said they picked bulls that had great weight for age, great structure, industry-leading EBVs and that moved freely.
He said over more than 10 years, they’d purchased more than 20 Glendan Park bulls and had been very happy with how they’d bred on.
The family also breeds about 20 bulls as “reserves” each year. His father Neville said they’d picked “good, athletic bulls”.
Fellow long-time client RS Rundell & Sons, Condah, bought two bulls, each at $4000. Also with two bulls each were Blink Bonnie Herefords, Lake Mundi, paying $9000 and $4000 respectively; and Glen Ewan Pastoral Company, Balranald, NSW, paying $9000 and $4000.
Principal Alvio Trovatello said he was really happy with sale result, and while it was pleasing to see representatives from interstate studs secure sires, it was also terrific to have the support of commercial buyers “from far and wide”.
In welcoming the big crowd of buyers and onlookers to the the joined sales with Adameluca Angus (which included a combined total of 80 registered buyers), Mr Trovatello said it had been a fantastic year for beef with record cattle prices and a widespread good season, so it was a great time to upgrade to new sires.
Such was the support that the average increased by almost $2400, from $4557 last year to $6952 and with more bulls sold.
Mr Trovatello said the family had started the stud in 1989 and in the past 10 or so years, they had more success including at the Hereford National at Wodonga and hosting on-property bull sales.
