David Young has returned to running his own herd of Hereford cows, after having leased his Ensay property for a few years.
Drenched twice in October and January, David’s 50 Mawarra blood, April-May drop steers were paddock weaned a few weeks ago, and are exceptionally quiet.
Veterinary treatments include 2x5-in-1, vitamin B12 twice, and Selenium, and have Copper & Cobalt blocks in the paddock.
Mr Young has been using quality wheaten hay when weaning his calves, which has given them some shine and condition.
Using this hay has supplemented the longer, dry grass in their paddock.
Mawarra bloodlines make up most of Mr Young’s herd, and the bulls were deployed to join for April-May calving. The calves have a ten week calving span.
Being well handled makes these calves very quiet, which is a prerequisite for most farmers, especially for smaller property owners.
What cannot be seen in the background, is Elders Ensay, Geoff Adams’, drone taking video footage of the cattle. Watching Mr Adams use the drone, just proves how well they will aid farming in the future.

After a few years of leasing out my property, it was time to take back the reins, and get my hands dirty. The most joyful part is seeing the culmination of my work, when the calves are sold.
