Weaned steers and heifers still sold strongly at Leongatha, where 2692 cattle were yarded last Thursday, but the price of grown steers eased about $100.
Hobbs and Bateman, Bemboka, NSW, sold two pens of 20-24mo Angus steers – the tops, 600kg, sold at $1760. Their younger steers, 10-12mo, sold to $1165.
Stan and Marilyn Reilly, Lorstan Nominees, Bengworden, sold 18-20mo steers – a mix of Herefords and vendor-bred black baldy and Angus – to $1670, average $1550. Their vendor-bred 10-12mo black baldy steers, 385kg, made $1350.
Clypso Farms, Loch, sent in 16-18mo Charolais steers, 522kg, $1640. John Agostino, Rosedale, sold 18-20mo Charolais steers, 496kg, $1550; his line of Charolais, Hereford, Angus and Black Baldy steers av $1497.
Anderstoney, Kilcunda, sent in 16-18mo black baldy steers, 423kg, to $1530.
Dairy farmers were also continuing to reap the benefits of holding onto and selling steers – Hengstberger and Lloyd, Dumbalk, sold a pen of 18-20mo Friesian steers, 425kg, for $1070.
Among the large yarding of weaned cattle, R&W Horner, Ryanston, sent in a pen of 10-11mo Te Mania bloodline Angus steers, 425kg, that returned $1560.
Steve and Lisa Harrison, Giffard West, sold weaned Charolais steers, 444kg, for $1530. G&K Roberts, Binginwarri, sold a line of Yancowinna blood weaned Angus and black baldy steers to $1460 for the top-weight pen, 363kg; the line av $1320.
The bidding dipped below $1000 for cross-bred or plainer cattle.
Most of the 76 pens of well-bred, weaned heifers made more than $1000/head and they topped at $1600, for a pen of 450kg EU-accredited 14-16mo Angus heifers, Banquet and Rennylea blood, vendor Danny and Kim Kuch, Darriman. Their three pens av $1547.
