Inland troughs caused scattered thunderstorms across north west Queensland this week, but it was one storm that startled drivers on the Flinders Highway.
On Saturday January 20, 15 kilometres west of Hughenden a thick, dark wall fronted motorists on the highway, as rain pelted down.
One motorist reported they had to slow down to 50 kilometres per hour due to lack of visibility.
“When I was in the middle of the storm there was heaps of lightening and there was a red haze, which I thought was rather odd,” she said.
“I was lucky an escort vehicle was driving in front of me because I could hardly see.”
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) originally released a thunderstorm warning for Julia Creek, but hit between Richmond and Hughenden instead.
In town, Hughenden recorded no rainfall but BOM confirmed between 20-30mm fell from that one storm.
Other parts of north west Queensland also experienced thunderstorms with Richmond recording 34.8mm on January 22 and Mount Isa recording 55mm on January 23.
More scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue over the next two weeks.
