Charters Towers’ detectives investigating the overnight alleged serious assault of a teenager at a local nightclub have charged a man with grievous bodily harm.
Just after 1am police were called to a licenced venue on Gill Street following reports a man had allegedly been punched to the head, falling onto the floor.
A crime scene was declared and an 18-year-old Tully man transported to Townsville Base Hospital with critical head injuries.
A 23-year-old Kirwan man was arrested at the scene and has been charged in relation to the incident. He has been denied police bail and is due to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday morning, January 23.
10am Saturday:
A male is assisting police with enquiries following an assault in Charters Towers overnight that has left an 18-year-old man in hospital.
According to Police Media, local police attended reports of an assault at a licenced premise on Gill Street at around 1am on Saturday, where they located an 18-year-old male with head injuries.
He was transported to the Charters Towers hospital in a serious condition.
A police spokeswoman said a helicopter transfer to the Townsville hospital had been due to take place but she couldn’t confirm if it had been undertaken.
“The injury is consistent with a one-punch attack but that can’t be confirmed at this stage,” she said.
No charges had been laid at the time of writing.
