Bidding oozed confidence and enthusiasm at Hamilton independent agents British breeds heifer sale on Wednesday.
Competing for a reduced yarding of 1923 predominantly Angus and Hereford cattle, a broad range of feeders, backgrounders and restockers bid freely on all lots to again deliver better than expected prices.
The market top of $1576 a head was paid for a draft of Kingsley and Peter Peaches’ Comly Bank Angus heifers, by the Weeran and Toora West-blood sires.
The yard of 21, 398kg, was bid to 396c/kg by Mt Gambier agency O’Connor & Graney, SA while the second draft of the Comly Park heifers, 358kg, were chased to the sale high of 426c/kg and realised $1525.
Most other heifer sales, regardless of breed, made $1262 to $1389 a head and averaged 364c/kg for those weighed 360kg or heavier while lighter heifers made $1010 to $1290 and averaged 374c/kg.
The best of the Hereford sales were made for Leon and Sally Wheeler, Wallacedale on their line of Yarram Park and Mawarra-blood heifers.
Their EU-accredited yard of 27, 357kg, made 366c/kg or $1308 a head and were snapped up by Hereford stud breeders, Jeremy Upton and Antony Baillieu trading as Western District Pastoral Co.
WDP and Injemira Advanced Genetics, Holbrook, NSW were major supporters of their Hereford genetics, both securing numerous lots as future breeders.
