THE first Naracoorte weaner sales of 2017 raked in a massive $6.55 million in sales across two days.
There were 3407 steers sold on Thursday last week and 1471 heifers on Friday.
The highest price a head for steers was $1640 for a pen of 25 from WV James & Son, Lucindale, SA.
The James family offered an outstanding line-up of 679 European Union and Pasturefed Cattle Assurance System-accredited Angus, Angus/Simmental and Angus-cross steers, as well as 317 heifers.
WV James & Son averaged a massive $1520 for their steers, which was $321 up on the $1199 achieved at last year’s sale.
The family’s average cents a kilogram for their steers was also up by about 40c/kg, at $3.88/kg, compared to $3.39/kg last year. Their average a head for heifers was $1280 or $3.80/kg.
The average weight of the steers was 392kg and the average of the heifers was 338kg.
Naracoorte Combined Agents Association chairman Darren Maney said the steer auction featured an outstanding yarding of calves, with a lot of weight.
“There were a lot of calves weighing in excess of 380kg,” he said.
“There was very strong feed-lot competition throughout the sale.”
Thomas Foods International provided hot competition, snapping up about 1000 steers.
The sale result was also boosted by JBS buying for four Tasmanian properties.
Pinkerton, Palm, Hamlyn & Steen director Robin Steen said the steer sale was extremely strong right the way through.
“The calves had plenty of weight, and plenty of quality, and sold accordingly,” he said.
“There was strong local feed-lot inquiry.”
Glendoon Past Co, Binnum, kicked off the sale with 13 Angus steers, 466kg, Pathfinder/Sterita Park-blood, that made $1635 or $3.50/kg to Thomas Foods International. The same vendor also sold 24 steers, 427kg, for $1515 or $3.54/kg to TFI and a further 26 steers, 380kg, for $1420 or $3.73/kg.
Heathdale, Stewarts Range, sold 29 EU Pathfinder-bld steers, 433kg, for $1570 or $3.62/kg to TFI, along with 16 steers, 413kg, for $1490 or $3.60/kg.
The same vendor also sold 26 steers, 396kg, for $1465 or $3.69/kg, to TFI, and 18 steers, 370kg, for $1435 or $3.87/kg.
Heathdale also sold 16 heifers, 381kg, for $1370 or $3.59/kg and 20 heifers, 351kg, for $1280 or $3.64/kg.
DK&JD Symonds, Edenhope, Vic, sold 23 EU steers, Hazeldean-bld, 412kg, for $1510 or $3.66/kg to Princess Royal.
The same vendor also sold 21 steers, 380kg, for $1435 or $3.77/kg, and five weighing 326kg for $1330 or $4.07/kg.
PG McCallum Farm Trust, Naracoorte, sold 29 Pathfinder-bld steers, 394kg, for $3.70/kg or $1460.
Tallageira Pastoral, Lucindale, sold 29 EU steers, Pathfinder/Sterita Park-bld, for $3.70/kg or $1504 to TFI, and also 28 steers, 388kg, for $3.76/kg or $1461. The same vendor also sold 23 steers, 366kg, for $3.86/kg or $1413 and a further 28 steers, 346kg, for $3.94kg or $1366.
Lakeview Cullulleraine, Bordertown, sold 14 Pathfinder-blds, 365kg, for $3.70/kg or $1348 to TFI.
The same vendor also sold 16 steers, Oakdowns/Allendale-bld, 349kg, for $3.85/kg or $1345 and 13 steers, 291kg, for $3.95/kg or $1153.
WF&KA Munro, Dunholme Props, Koppamurra, sold 19 Angus steers, EU and PCAS, 433kg, for $1605 or $3.70/kg.
JT&GM McKay, Egremont, Lucindale, sold 12 Hereford steers, 314kg, for $1220 or $3.88/kg and 33 steers, 326kg, for $1325 or $4.06/kg.
