Landmark yarded 1200 cattle last Thursday for a large contingent of buyers which congregated at Casterton, which the agency’s Greg Bright said was testament to the quality of cattle renowned from the area.
At Landmark Casterton’s annual weaner and store cattle, Mr Bright said competition from South East South Australia, Victoria’s Western district and feedlots dominated proceedings with several orders from outside the local areas including Tasmania, Gippsland and Wagga Wagga, NSW.
He said seasonal conditions were dictating the strength of the store market at the moment, with the local districts and northern areas receiving good rains this spring.
A feature of the sale was the Wando Hills’ Angus herd dispersal which, Mr Bright said, sold to at times extreme demand far exceeding pre-sale expectations. The herd was of Pathfinder blood and all cows had been depastured to Pathfinder Angus bulls.
Highlights in the cows and calves, and joined females, including Wando Hills’ 27 Angus cow and calf units that made $2900.
Their PTIC cows also sold very well – 22 of the 2013-drop PTIC cows made $2550; 18 of the 2013-drop cows PTIC $2540; 23 of the 2012-drop PTIC cows $2440; 14 of the 2012-drop PTIC cows $2500; 14 of the 2011-drop PTIC cows $2300; and 13 of the 2010-drop PTIC cows $2520.
Account Tora Downs sold 10 Angus cows each with a calf at-foot for $2500.
Baroona’s eight Angus-Friesian-cross cows with Angus calves made $2240.
Summerglen’s 12 Angus cows, third to fifth calvers, Boonaroo blood, PTIC made $2300.
In the steers, account Springvale’s 14 Angus steers sold for $1475; Greenhills’ 10 Hereford-Shorthornn-cross steers $1330.
Wynadra’s nine Angus steers fetched $1390 and Autofarm’s 11 Angus-cross steers $1440.
Steer weaners topped at $1390, for Smithfield’s 22 Angus-cross steers, Pathfinder blood.
Wando Hills’ 90 Angus steers, also of Pathfinder blood, made $1370.
Una Vale’s 11 Angus steers, Boonaroo blood, sold for $1360; Riverdale’s 20 Angus steers, Banquet blood, $1355. At $1350/head each were Hedge Farms’ seven Angus steers, Bushy Park blood; as well as Gunadoo’s 15 Angus-cross steers, Pathfinder blood.
Gable Lodge’s 23 Limousin-Murray Grey-cross steers made $1340 and Springvale’s 16 Angus steers, Pathfinder blood, $1330.
Riverview’s eight Angus steers, Boonaroo blood, $1320.
Summer Lodge’s 11 Angus-cross steers sold for $1280; Wannelglen’s 10 Angus-cross steers $1250; Corrie Glen’s seven Murray Grey steers $1250; and Wyuna’s nine Angus steers $1240.
In the heifers, Springvale’s 24 Angus heifers made $1370.
Both at $1300 were Gunadoo’s nine Angus heifers $1300 and Riverdale’s 11 Angus heifers.
Corinyah East’s 18 Murray Grey heifers made $1260; Curramulka’s 21 Angus heifers $1230; Karadeen’s seven Hereford-Simmental-cross heifers $1210 and Avalon’s 12 Hereford heifers $1165.
Heifer weaners highlights included Smithfield’s 14 Angus-cross heifers at $1240; and Gable Lodge’s 16 Limousin-Murray Grey-cross heifers at $1200.
Corrie Glen’s seven Murray Grey heifers sold for $1150. Una Vale’s 14 Angus heifers made $1145. At $1140 each were Hedge Farms’ nine Angus heifers and Wando Estate’s 18 Angus heifers $1140.
Wando Hills’ 21 Angus heifers fetched $1115 and Riverview’s 11 Angus heifers $1110.
