Dale Sullivan and son Alex, Shallum Holdings, Killara, will offer 110 steers and 40-50 heifers by Injemira and Melville Park bulls.
The bulls are chosen to add good colour, eyes and feet to the herd, as well as for their hardiness.
Mr Sullivan thinks the calves have more weight in them this year compared to last year and he’s impressed that the cows are “also in really good nick”.
The March/April drop calves will be weaned from this week.
The EU and MSA accredited calves are also PCAS eligible.
They’ve received their 5-in-1 shots, B12 twice and an Eclipse drench.
In a great commendation of the Sullivan family’s breeding operation, Mark Greening, Injemira, has repeatedly bought their steers and heifers, and a Casterton producer buys some every year.
Dale said they generally buy three or four bulls a year in the $8000 to $10,000 range. They also look for good milk figures and a low birthweight if everything else is right about the bull.
The family has sold at the Casterton steer weaner sale with Elders for about 60 years.
“It’s been a good sale over the years,” Dale said.
“And it’ll be nice to be rewarded again next year – you’ve got to take the good times with the tough times too.”
