Paul O’Brien, Sunnyside, Dunrobin, will sell about 200 steers and heifers at the upcoming Casterton weaner sales.
His Angus calves are of Pathfinder and Glatz’s Black Angus boodlines, the latter of which he started using recently.
He said he’s been impressed by “some good looking bulls” among the Glatz’s offering, from Avenue Range, South Australia. Mr O’Brien said the calves they’d sired had “...a good bit of growth about them”.
As with many in the Western District, Mr O’Brien’s calves have come through a very wet and long winter.
“But I reckon a lot of calves (throughout the district) will weigh heavier than people think,” Mr O’Brien said.
He anticipated they will grow to be of similar weights to the draft he offered last year. The Sunnyside calves will benefit from grazing on river flats, where there is a great regrowth after hay has been cut and baled.
Mr O’Brien supported the sale for at least 10 years. His calves will again be offered with normal drenching and vaccinations up to date.
He said they would get Vitamin ADE when they were weaned within the week.
His steer calves will be consigned in Victoria’s Premier 62nd annual steer weaner sale, hosted by Elders Casterton, and the heifers in the combined sale with Landmark.
