CENTRAL Gippsland beef producers sold cattle with size and weight at Sale store market on Friday, before the weather heats up and the season turns.
The yarding of 1240 cattle attracted buyers from TFI and Garrisons, as well as local and South Gippsland grass finishers.
Among the grown steers, Nick and Marie Brady, Tyers, sold 18-20 month-old Angus, 527kg, at $1805. A second pen, 493kg, sold at $1690.
F&K Crossfield, Sale, sent in two year-old Hereford steers, 525kg, which made $1770. A second pen, 485kg, sold at $1630.

Perry Bridge’s Robyn Kuch sent in her annual draft of Angus steers, 13-18 month-old, Banquet and Kunuma bloodlines. The 17-18 month-old tops, averaging 487kg, sold at $1690. The line averaged $1558.
Bob Krkljes, Fulham, sold 10-11 month Angus steers, 418kg, $1610; and bought by a local grass finisher.
David Bates, Munro, sold a line of 14 month-old Angus steers, bought as six month-old calves off AuctionsPlus, out of the Monaro region. Friday’s draft sold to $1595 for the tops, average 418kg; the line averaged $1570.
Greenwood Livestock principal Ben Greenwood said Mr Bates had bought 180 head in total – 60 head were sold last month and 60 were sold on Friday with the balance to return to market when they were ready. Last month, Mr Bates’ top pen averaged 425kg and sold at $1660; average for the draft was $1345.
Brian Frawley, The Heart, sold 14-15 month-old Angus steers, Pinora bloodline, 444kg, $1550.
Hopfields, Dutson, sent in 15-16 month-old Shorthorn steers, 377kg, that sold at $1500.
Jim Fleming, Willung, also sold Shorthorn steers, yearling-off, 397kg, $1450.
Seaspray’s Bruce and Maureen Hawkins sold a line of 8-9 month-old Angus steers, the top two pens sold at $1320, average 357kg and 330kg. The three pens averaged $1290.
A month ago, the same vendor sold 10 month-old Angus steers, 377kg, to $1470, average $1406 across the draft.
The top run of heifers returned good money, particularly for well bred females, until interest and bidding dropped off for plainer cattle.
B&A Ross, Stockdale, sold 15 month-old Angus heifers at $1290.
R&E Newnham, Longford, sold 8 month-old Hereford roan heifers, $1230.
Bruce and Maureen Hawkins, Seaspray, sent in a line of 8-9 month-old Angus heifers – the tops, 339kg, sold at $1215; the line averaged $1054.
Holley Plains’ Thea Crooke sold a pen of 14-16 month-old Angus and black baldy heifers at $1140.
There was a lot of interest in cows and calves at Sale on Friday, where a much larger draft than normal was put up.
A pen of Angus heifers with calves at-foot (CAF), Pinora bloodline, and the mothers depastured to a Kunuma Angus bull, sold to spirited bidding for $2700. They were purchased for Michael Brown, Sale.
AA&SG Warren, Nambrok, sold several pens of Angus cows and calves, running with an Innisdale bull, to $2220, average $2020.
The estate of R Shingles, Maffra, sold Angus heifers with Angus CAF, $1860.
B&A Simpson, Boisdale, sold Blue cows with black baldy CAF, $1840.
A pen of Angus cows with Angus CAF, estate G Sedman, Bundalaguah, sold at $1800.
A&J Gerrand, Longford, sold Angus-F1 cows with Angus calves, $1700.
Many cows and calves went to South Gippsland.
