Colac
Yarding: 1117
Grown steers to $1440
Grown heifers to $1270
Cows and calves to $3500
PRICES for heavy cattle eased slightly at last week’s Colac store sale.
On Friday, agents yarded 1117 cattle, including 100 cows and calves.
Colac Stock Agents Association president Matt Nelson said local support was strong, with most of the steers going back into the district.
“There were not a lot of outside, or interstate, buyers, (but) we had a few from Warrnambool buying a few heifers,” Mr Nelson said. “There’s a lot of feed about, at the moment, people are putting cattle back into the paddocks.”
Mr Nelson said heavy heifers eased in price, from the last sale, due to the increase in available cattle. That reflected the conditions in other saleyards, around Victoria last week.
“That’s what we found, there was not a lot of feedlot activity for the heavier heifers.”
Of the heavier steers, account T Moore sold 10 Angus steers, Otway Angus blood for $1440.
At 14-16 months old, these steers weighed an average of 390kg, so made the equivalent of 369c/kg liveweight.
Larobe Angus sold 11 steers for 344c/kg.
Mingawalla Angus, Beeac, was among the better sales for the lighter cattle. Mingawalla sold 38 Angus steers, 335kg, to $3800 equivalent to 388c/kg.
A pen of eight 327kg Charolais steers, consigned by BF Kent, went for $1310, or 400c/kg.
Eight to ten month-old weaner steers sold for between $1000 and $1100. The 280-300kg heifers on offer sold for prices equivalent to between 350 and 360c/kg.
Mr Nelson said 12 Hereford heifers, vendor Lynch, sold for $1240, or 291c/kg and G&D Howard sold six Angus heifers, 425kg, at $1270 or 298c/kg. The 280-300kg heifers made rates of between 350-360c/kg.
R&A Spence’s Charolais cows and calves sold to the category top of $3500. The five to seven year-old cows had July to September Charolais calves at-foot.
The next Colac store sale will be on Friday, December 2.
