WELL-presented drafts of Hereford, Angus and black baldy cattle were penned at Bairnsdale on Friday.
Local and South Gippsland restockers drove the top price to $1740, for 16-18 month-old Angus and black baldy steers, 515kg, vendor L Hammond, Dargo.
Orbost’s Mekken P/L sold a line of Angus steers, top average weight 478kg, to $1715. The draft av $1655.
Frank Waller, Dargo, sent in 16-18 month-old Hereford steers, 523kg, that returned $1700.
Woodglen’s GC Hine offered a draft of rising two year-old Hereford-Shorthorn steers. The tops av 472kg and sold to $1700. Dargo’s L Trewin’s two pens of Hereford steers, 14-16 month-old, 475kg, sold to $1690.
Colin and Pam Trewin, Jarrahmond, sent in 14 month-old Hereford steers, the tops av 488kg, sold at $1630. Their Charolais steers sold at $1330.
Females sold to $1350, for Angus heifers, 363kg, from AR Brown, Orbost.
Feedlot and background buyers, who missed out on steers, drove heifer sales.
Colin and Pam Trewin alsosold 14 month-old Charolais heifers, 393kg, at $1330. Graeme ‘Jingles’ Neal, Swan Reach, sold a pen of 20 month-old Angus and black baldy heifers, 372kg, for $1240. Charlie and Shirley Commins, Ensay, sent in two pens of Hereford heifers, Nunniong blood, 415kg, that made $1210.
A quality line-up of cows and calves was underpinned by the annual draft of Hereford heifers with calves at-foot (CAF) from Jim Pendergast, Penderscourt, Benambra. The tops, with black baldy CAF made $2010. The heifers were drafted with either black baldy or Hereford calves and av $1950.
VC&AJ Wyatt, Johnsonville, sold mixed-age Angus cows with black baldy calves and depastured to an Angus bull, $2125. A second pen sold at $1810.
Tamcal P/L, Swan Reach and Jackson’s Crossing, sold a draft of Angus pairs, Dunoon bloodline – the heifers and calves made $1950 and the third and fourth calvers with progeny made to $1975.
