KONONGWOOTONG Dorsets’ on-property sale last week achieved a strong result, particularly with its stud rams.
With a total of 155 rams sold for an average of $1042 – which is a $56 increase on 2015 sale.
All of the 10 stud rams offered sold, topping $4500 twice an av $2270.
Lot 2 was the first ram to achieve the high price being knocked down to repeat buyer LG McKinnon & Sons, Strathdownie. This 17 month-old sire, K 15-114 was sired by Mullinger Park 12-085, and had traits of 14.5 for post weaning weight (PWWT), -1.4 for post weaning fat (Pfat) and -0.42 for post eye muscle (PEMD).
This ram had extra length, depth of muscle, neck extension, volume, clean points while being structurally sound, making him ideal for the McKinnons to produce their prime lambs.
Lot 6 was the second ram to achieve the equal top price, being knocked down to Avolyn Pty Ltd. K 15-249, sired by Konong 14-031 which is a Dingo son, had impressive traits of 13.7 for PWWT, -2.1 for Pfat and 0.37 for post eye muscle (PEMD).
In the flock ram section, 145 of 190 sold, av $958 and a top of $1900. This clearance is slightly down on last years, but the average is up $53.
Lot 20 was the top-priced flock ram, being knocked down to repeat buyers, Brewis & Co. They purchased a total of four rams, av $1675.
While RR&CA Middleton, Powers Creek, were the main volume buyer, purchasing 16 flock rams to a top of $1100 twice, av $962.5. R&L Stewart secured eight rams, av $912.50, while Blythwood Pastoral and G Smith & Co each purchased seven rams each, av $1428 and $1071 respectively.
Principal Alistair Sutherland said after the sale that he was pleased the stud rams sold well, while the top end of the flock rams were strong but then we just ran out of the volume buying power.
Bernie Grant, LMB Linke Livestock, Hamilton, said the rams presented very well on the day.
