White Dorper ewes: 4 of 6 sold to a top $1000
THE inaugural Bendigo Dorper and White Dorper Sale was presented by the Australian Dorper and White Dorper Association Inc. at the Bendigo Agricultural Show last weekend.
And while the sale didn’t enjoy the success of some of the more recent northern Dorpers sales, most vendors agreed that it was good opportunity to further expose southern buyers to the potential of the breed and to showcase quality stud and commercial animals.
In front of a large captive crowd the sale offered 68 lots comprising of Dorper rams and White Dorper rams and ewes, with 40 lots ultimately selling under the hammer.
Lot 1 a Dorper Ram from Glen Park stud, Wentworth, NSW, sold to the top price of $3500 to Brad and Tanya Edson from Red Rock Dorpers, Keith, SA. Mr Edson said the ram had sire potential and it would be used in their growing Dorper stud flock.
The ram has excellent growth for age and sound structure.
Glen Park principals Brendon and Maureen Duncan enjoyed further success also selling the top-priced White Dorper for $5000.
Buyer Angus McTaggert, Nonning Pastoral, Naracoorte, SA, said the ram was a good meaty specimen that was structurally correct, full shedding and had excellent growth figures.
Mr McTaggert, who has converted from Merinos runs a 20,000-strong certified organic Dorper lamb station at Port Augusta, SA, along with a stud operation at Naracoorte.
He also offered three rams at the sale topping at $1400.
The top priced ewe in the sale was sold by Merribrook principal Graeme Collins for $1000.
It sold to Will Hughes, Daylesford, and will form part of his new stud.
The ewe with a ewe lamb at-foot has had recent show success at Bendigo and at the Melbourne Royal in September.
Other notable sales included the shows supreme champion exhibited by the Australis stud, Strathalbyn, selling for $2400 to Dan Teskara from Roslynmead West, Echuca.
The sale was operated by Landmark with Peter Godbolt the auctioneer.
