Wurrook
Total clearance of 84 rams, sold to $4500, av $1944
LAST week’s Wurrook’s on property ram sale at Rokewood was a great success and defied the trend away from finer wool.
All 84 rams offered were cleared for an average of $1944, up on last year’s average of $1372.
Principal Paul Walton was very please and said the result reflected good commodity prices and seasonal conditions, as well as a mix of repeat buyers buying more and a smattering of new clients.
The sale topped at $4500 for lot 63 sold to Jarrod Ross, Inverlaul Nominees, Natte Yallock. Mr Ross described the ram as having a good stud head with bright wool and a proven genetic background that “just works” with his mainly Wurrook based self-replacing ewe flock.
Long-time interstate supporter Mark Pilley, Hill End, NSW, bought lot 2, the second top-priced ram, for $4000. He purchased a second ram for $3250, to go into his 2400-ewe operation.
The blade shearer spoke highly of the ram’s good skin and structure, and commented “that they are about as good as Merryville sheep you’ll find”.
“I focus on greasy fleece weight, structure and lambing percentage and Wurrook sheep continue produce on my marginal country,” Mr Pilley said.
Mr Walton said regular buyers’ confidence to buy in volume underpinned the sale’s strength. Of the 38 registered buyers, volume purchasers included Satterness Pty Ltd, via Bannockburn buying agent, who bought seven rams for $1000-$1500. Rumler and Trainor Partnership, Lismore, also purchased seven rams with a solid average of $2307.
Other regulars included the Kelly family, Strathfieldsaye, buying six and the Terry and Shane Bedgood, Napoleons, going home with five.
Also noteworthy was lot 1 that was sold with one bold $3000 bid from the Glen Brothers, Wattlebank Merinos, Guilford.
Elders and Arcadian Wool conducted the sale.
