Last Thursday, the Nhill and Kaniva Districts’ Annual Ewe and Wether Lamb Sale drew a large crowd of local Wimmera and South Australians.
In beautiful spring weather, buyers bid strongly on a top quality yarding of principally locally-bred sheep.
One and a half year-old Merino ewes sold for $172 to a top of $220. Two and a half year-old Merino ewes made $170-$180 and breeding ewes $132-$176. Wether lambs sold for $70-$110.
Westech Ag Kyle Livestock principal Stuart Kyle commented on the quality of sheep and strength of local buyers.
Andrew McIllree, Driscoll McIllree and Dickinson (DMD), said buyers were very keen to secure quality ewes and prices reflected the strength of season and renewed interest in sheep.
Sales included EHF&JE Ridgway 210 Merino ewes, July/August 2015-drop, Ridgway Advance blood that sold for $220; and CA&JM Smith’s 250 Merino ewes, April/May 15 drop, $212.
TN&CA Koop’s 133 Merino ewes, 2.5 years with 100pc White Suffolk lambs at-foot sold for $234. DF&CK Clark’s 90 Merino ewes 3.5 years, August-shorn, made $180.
JR Dickinson & Son Family Trust sold 307 Merino ewes, 4.5 years, August-shorn, for $176. HN,SH&WL Hawker’s 190 Merino ewes, 5.5 years, August-shorn made $144.
For Merino whether lambs, AS&MK Cook’s 276 September-shorn lambs made $110; SH&AF Clark’s 240, also September-shorn reached $101; CA&JM Smith’s 275 April/May 16-drop made $92.
HM Howe sent in 102 SAMMs with lambs that sold for $102.
