AFTER a total clearance of 40 rams last year, Boorana Merinos has increased their lots on offer at their third annual ram sale in Mortlake last Wednesday.
Of the 64 rams on offer, 58 sold to a top of $2400, which is up $200 on last year, av $1415, which is up $395.
Russell Macgugan, Australian Wool Network, Hamilton, purchased the top-priced ram on behalf of his parents, Ian and Heather Macgugan, Rannoch Park, Dunkeld.
Mr Macgugan said his parents have been buying from Boorana for three years, and are starting to see their genetics come through now.
“They’re productive, plain bodied sheep, with great fertility,” Mr Macgugan said.
He said the top-priced ram, who recorded a 17.5 micron, 16.6 coefficient of variation (CV), 2.9 standard deviation (SD), and 99.8pc comfort factor (CF), was a big, deep bodied sheep.
“He stands up beautifully and proud, and has good, white productive wool.”
Peter, John and Anne Tischler, and Scott Altmann, Tarraleah, Edenhope, purchased nine rams at the sale, their second time buying in bulk at Boorana.
Peter Tischler said the rams have good genetics, and a good doing ability.
“They’re no frill sheep, who don’t require mulesing because they’re nice and plain on the breech,” Mr Tischler said.
Boorana Merinos stud principal Will Lynch said he was wrapped with the results, particularly given the increased offering.
“It was a solid result, it just goes to show that there is still interest in these types of Merinos,” Mr Lynch said.
He said repeat buyers were coming back for their uncomplicated sheep.
Andrew and Wendy Newell, Kyanga White Suffolks, also had a total clearance of 48 rams at the sale, to a top of $1050, av $760, a result Mr Newell was “very happy” with.
