THERE was a general easing in prices across the 2300 yarding at Pakenham on Thursday, following the previous day’s prime market that was softer.
A good example was Covino Farms, Longford, sold two pens of 16-18mo Angus steers a fortnight ago – the tops, 450kg, sold at $1790; the second pen, 428kg, $1730.
Last Thursday, the same vendor received $1570 for Angus steers, 442kg, and $1530 for their 405kg brothers, illustrating that well-bred cattle with size and weight were back about $200.
Having said that, it was still a good sale, with local restockers, feedlots, butchers and processors vying for cattle with size and weight. This kept the prices up with many of these cattle making $1400-1700.
A pen of 20 Angus steers, 500kg, vendor Annat P/L, Berwick, sold at $1830. A second pen sold at $1720.
Clifton Park, Phillip Island, sold a pen of Angus steers, 520kg, $1800; bought by a local restocker.
KW Grey, Bena, sent in 16-18mo Hereford steers – the tops, 497kg, returned $1690; seconds, 450kg, $1570.
The Pines, Ripplebrook, sold a mix of 16-18mo Charolais baldy and roan steers to $1660. M Neutz’s 14mo Charolais steers, 476kg, sold to $1630.
D&C Droppert, Sale, sold two pens of 15-16mo Hereford steers, 460kg first pen, $1620.
Hillendale, Drouin, received $1610 for 14-18mo Charolais steers.
Peppi & Danielle Inverno, Dalmore, sold a pen of 18mo Hereford steers, 521kg, that returned $1600.
R&J Dalton, Boisdale, sent in Angus and black baldy steers, no weight displayed, that sold at $1595. The same vendor’s Hereford and black baldy steers, 405kg, made $1470 and Charolais and Angus steers, 420kg, $1410.
S Bleicher, Caldermeade, sent in Angus steers, 445kg, $1550; 392kg, $1460. The same vendor’s heifers, 437kg, sold at $1470; 383kg, $1320.
BL Tainton, Tynong North, received $1470 for Murray Grey-Charolais steers, 445kg. Woodcote P/L, Perry Bridge, sold 13-15mo Hereford steers, 415kg, $1450.
Younger, lighter cattle also sold well at Pakenham. G Brough, Longwarry, sold 12mo Angus steers, 396kg, $1510.
G&B Hunter, Woodstock, sent in yearling Angus steers, Pert Angus blood, that sold at $1455.
A Robinson, Arawata, sold Angus weaner steers, 365kg, $1400.
Hawkline P/L, Warragul, sold weaned Angus steers, 397kg, $1440 and second pen, 284kg, $1270.
Female cattle were back in price at Pakenham last Thursday, for heifers and cows and calves. M Kelly sold Limousin heifers to $1310.
AH Wilson & JGT Thomas, Yannathan, sold Angus heifers, 416kg, sired by a stud Fernleigh Angus bulls, $1330. A second pen of sisters, 337kg, sold at $1230.
Shorthorn-Angus heifers, straight off their mothers, vendor estate of Evelyn Draper, Wollert, sold at $1100.
A herd dispersal from Spring Meadows, Kilcunda, was eagerly sought, selling to $3100 for 70 F1 cows with 5-7mo Limousin calves and rejoined to the same stud Limousin bulls. The bulls sold to $3400.
R Murray, Flynn, received to $2700 for a draft of Angus cows and Charolais calves sired by stud Falls View Charolais bulls, the cows depastured to the same bulls.
The Irvine family, BI Park P/L, Konagadeera, sent in a line of Angus cows with calves at foot that returned a top of $2500.
HP Bourke, Caldermeade, sold cows springing to a stud Angus bull, $1800.
KR Hendriek, Inverloch, sold Hereford heifers PTIC to a Yancowinna stud bull, $1520.
