LAST week’s pea harvest at a site in Kyancutta is proving to not be a one-off with further deliveries of cereals into a facility at Thevenard, near Ceduna.
Viterra’s Thevenard site received its first load of new season grain yesterday (Monday), signalling the start of harvest in the area.
The first load into Thevenard for 2016/17 was a load of barley, delivered by Penong grower Sam Shippard.
The first load of new season wheat was also delivered yesterday by Brian Woollatt, truck driver for Ceduna Bulk Transport, on behalf of grower Peter Meier.
Viterra operations manager for the Western region James Murray said harvest had started later this year for most growers.
“A few growers have started to harvest, but the cooler weather conditions have generally delayed the start of harvest in the area,” Mr Murray said.
“Importantly, our sites are ready to go when growers are able to start.
“An extra 15,000 tonnes of storage capacity was added to Thevenard in preparation for a large crop.
“New season grain exports are expected to start soon after harvest begins, with export capacity at Thevenard allocated through long term agreements for the first time this year.”
