REPEAT and new buyers from all states attended the Cashmore Oaklea Three Per Cent Maternal Ram sale in Hamilton recently.
The bidding was strong for the outstanding line up of high performance rams from a flock noted for fertility and overall high performance.
A total clearance of 414 maternals and 15 Coopworths averaged $1811 offered at physical auction and interfaced with AuctionsPlus. Lot 105 was the top price at $4750 to ES and G Sellers, Bendoc.
One of the 127 rams offered in the one per cent band, had great phenotype and had very high yearling numbers of weaned ASBVs of +22 and a $ maternal index of 139. Twelve more 1pc rams were taken by other studs continuing the trend of Cashmore Oaklea supplying industry leading sires to multiplier operations.
Hassad Internation, Barton Station, Moyston, led the volume buyers picking up 46 maternal rams, at more than a $2000 average to a top of $2500, while Terrinalum Partnership, Darlington, bought 26 maternal rams to a top of $1600.
South Australian buyer Coola Station, Kongorong, SA, purchased 16 maternal rams and was the leading interstate volume buyer, paying up to $3750 for an elite maternal ram. Connorville Station, Cressy, Tasmania purchased 14 Maternal rams to $2200, while Cyclone Trust, Mumbanner, purchased eight rams to a top of $3500.
G Smith & Co, Casterton, purchased eight maternal rams to a top of $3250.
Eighteen of the Cashmore Nudie rams also sold with lot 1 going for a top of $8200 to Nulkwyn Pty Ltd, Branxholme,
The top price smashed last years top price Cashmore Nudie ram which sold for $3900, clearly representing the growing interest in the breed. DJ and KM Kuch, Darriman, East Gippsland, bought six of the southern shedding sheep for their sheep flock to run with their cattle, to a top of $1800 at an average of $1200, while J and C Mossop, Penola, SA, purchased four rams to a top of $3200, at an average of $1850.
Co-principal John Keiller was happy with how the sale performed.
“They really are easy care sheep,” Mr Keiller said.
“They certainly have a following as you can see with the spread of buyers.
“They are performance recorded, easy care sheep and are well suited for southern Australia.”
The Cashmore Oaklea sheep have performed very well in Tasmania which saw 10 properties attend the sale and replenish their ram stocks.
Landmark Hamilton agent Xavier Shanahan said it was a solid sale built on the back of strong performance in previous years.
“People came to purchase high performance animals,” Mr Shanahan said.
“There was plenty on offer for the very astute purchaser. The sheep presented well due to the season, and the sale was backed by a long history of performance.
“Buyers came knowing there were investments with good return on capital.”
