KO Angus stud, Kangaloon, NSW, has taken home the breed’s supreme exhibit sash with the five year-old cow KO Dream G68.
It topped 70 entries from 15 studs across four states.
New Zealand judge Brent Fisher, Silverstream Charolais, was particularly impressed by the cow’s capacity – her barrel and “depth of girth”, that was part of her “great wedge shape”.
He said this indicated doing ability and would help her withstand climatic extremes.
KO Angus principal Theo Onisforou said the team only came to the Royal Melbourne Show when they thought they could win. Their show team only had one additional heifer.
“We were very confident with this cow – we love her,” Mr Onisforou said.
He said the cow stood out for her capacity, neck extension and great front.
She had her third calf, a seven month-old bull, at foot. They plan to show her at the 2018 Royal Easter Show, Sydney, with an older calf than she had this year.
For the supreme judging, she came out against the senior bull Waterlilli Knight K02, exhibited by 15 year-old Lilli Stewart, Waterlilli Angus, Birregurra.
Lilli’s family didn’t have cattle until she went to a handlers camp when she was eight years old.
“Then I convinced Dad to get me a heifer and it went on from there,” she said.
The Waterlilli stud has now grown to have 12 cows and two bulls.
The grand champion bull weighed 956kg and scanned 16mm rump and 15mm rib fat, and 130sqcm EMA.
Lilli said it was the bull’s show debut and she was very surprised to be awarded champion Angus bull against very strong competition.
Mr Fisher said the more he looked at this bull, the more he liked him.
“He’s got lovely type and performance,” he said.
“This big bull strides out well.
“Everything about that bull says quality to me.”
Two NSW studs took out the junior titles.
Greg and Sharon Fuller and Christie and Andrew Kennedy’s Pine Creek Angus stud, Woodstock, NSW, won junior champion bull with Black Diamond Ima Legend L416 (ET).
The April 2015-drop bull was sired Mctal Pure Product 903-55 and out of Black Diamond Miss Vanilla A305.
Mr Fisher commended its power, capacity, weight for age and Angus type.
The McLachlan Group’s August-drop heifer Talis Adventure L353 won junior champion.
