An older cow, with calf at foot, has taken out this year’s Red Angus Supreme Exhibit, at the Royal Melbourne Show.
Andrew and Nyssa Kelly’s Rosewood Red Angus stud, Lara, Victoria’s GK Red Ruby Stone H2 took out the top prize, after winning Senior Champion Cow and Grand Champion Female.
Red Ruby Stone was born on January 31, 2012 and sired by Red Eli Stone 29 E7, from GK Red Ruby F4.
During the judging for the Grand Champion female, judge Huw Evans, said he chose Red Ruby Stone, over her younger challenger, which “has it all in front of her.”
“I chose the bigger cow, four and half years old, she’s well up on the job, with a good bull calf at foot,” Mr Evans said.
“She’s a cow with a lot of capacity, and volume and muscle in her, but still gets around really well.
“She’s a big cow, but she still gets around on her feet and legs, which are feminine enough.”
Mr Evans picked Gary and Shelley Turnham, Barregowa Cattle Company, Gisborne’s, Barregowa Jubilee Diffy J04 (AI), an October 2013 drop calf, sired by GK Federer F23 (AI), from Moorwatha A40 as Reserve Senior Champion Cow.
He said the runner up had “beautiful volume and capacity, good teats and udder.”
The Grand Champion Bull ribbon was taken out by Barregowa Cattle Company, and the stud also won the Most Successful Red Angus Exhibitor trophy.
Barregowa Lieutentant Redman L01 (AI), born on June 17, 2015, was sired by Red RMJ Redman 1T, from Barregowa Diffy BCCH2.
The bull recorded Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s) of a birthweight of 2.2kg, a scrotal size of +1.1cm and an eye muscle area (EMA) of +2.1 square centimetres.
Lieutenant Redman had an intramuscular fat (IMF) of +0.4mm.
Mr Evans said he chose Redman for his softness and soundness.
“He’s a good long bull, with a lot of red meat, with a good topline and really good hindquarter, nice and clean up through that shoulder and top end, good testicles and clean underneath.”
The Senior Champion bull was won by Jeff and Sue Boland, Claremont Red Angus, Clunes, Victoria, with Goonoo Red Kaizer, (ET)GSJK35, an August, 2014 drop bull, sired by Red Soo Line Momentum7051(AMF0 (MAF) (NHF) (OSF, out of RRA Impish (3) ( ET) RRAB25
