Burramurra Santa Gertrudis Stud, Moama, NSW, has won the supreme Santa Gertrudis exhibit at this year’s Royal Melbourne Show.
The cow, which had a calf at-foot, won grand champion female, after winning the cow, over 30 months class.
Judge Hayden Green, Summit Livestock, Uranquinty, NSW, said that despite being young, the cow displayed great mothering potential.
“She’s young, but her business end is superb, she’s got a quality udder,” Mr Green said.
“She’s also tremendously soft, and has a great structure.”
The cow won over a bull from Nangaringa Santa Gertrudis, Loxton, SA, who was described as “tremendously powerful”.
“The bull will add power and muscle to a calf, it’s got great versatility,” Mr Green said.
Phil Hampson, Burramurra, said he thought his cow had the upper hand because of its proven mothering ability.
“This is her first calf, but she’s only two and a half years old,” Mr Hampson said.
“She’s got a lovely udder, so has a great milking ability.”
