A young heifer has taken out the Australian Shorthorn Supreme Exhibit at this year’s Royal Melbourne Show.
The Spencer family, Yuroke, Victoria, won the broad ribbon with Spencer Family Diva, (AI) (ET), a thirteen month old heifer, by Spry Paten's Ace G38, out of Sprys Picture Perfect B014.
Judge, Peter Collins, Merridale Angus stud, Tennyson, Victoria, said he chose the heifer, which also won Grand Champion Female, because of her depth of body, flank and “nice” udder.
”The sharpness and quality of this young female is why she is our grand champion, you should be very proud of having a female like that,” Mr Collins said.
“She is just an awesome exhibit.”
While the cow was still “only a baby”, she was structurally very sound and correct in all aspects.
The Spencer family also took out the Grand Champion bull and Junior Champion bull, with Spencer Family Lenny (AI), born in March, 2015, sired by Glengyron Governor, out of Spencer Family Viva La Fay.
Lenny recorded a weight of 834kg, a 13millimetre rump, 11mm rib and an eye muscle area (EMA) of 116square centimetres.
Mr Collins said he chose the bull because of strength of his spine and the thickness of his top.
Luke Spencer said there was always strong competition at the show but he thought the Supreme Exhibit, Spencer Family Diva, would give a strong showing.
“Her length and her smoothness throughout, stood out, she has great thickness over the top, and is still very feminine through the front end – those are the main points, which stood out to us.”
Mr Spencer said Diva would be put into calf and then be shown at the Sydney Easter Show.
