Rangan Charolais stud, Charleroi, has won supreme exhibit of the breed for the first time at the Royal Melbourne Show.
The Cook family’s stud took the broad ribbon at the feature breed judging with Rangan Showgirl G84 – a July 2011-drop cow by Harvie Redemption. They topped 88 exhibits from 21 exhibitors from four states.
“We haven’t shown her since she was 10 months old, and now she’s six years old,” Graeme Cook said, adding she won junior champion at the Yea show then.
She was shown with her fifth calf – an eight month-old bull calf – at-foot. Mr Cook said the bull calf would likely be offered for sale next year.
Mr Cook said the cow demonstrated the soft, easy doing, polled cattle for which he bred.
Her calf from the previous year won the 20-24 month-old female class.
The cow was out of Palgrove Showgirl 6, which the Cook family bought as an 11 year-old cow and flushed more than 300 embryos.
Mr Cook said all eight animals in their show team had Palgrove Showgirl in their pedigrees.
The family has been showing at Melbourne for three years and Mr Cook said his daughters had driven their involvement in it.
In the supreme judging, the cow beat champion bull, Elite Kustom Made, exhibited by Glen Waldron and Kim Groner, Elite Cattle Co, at Murwollock, Meandarra, Queensland.
The couple made the 20-hour drive down to Melbourne for the first time to take part in the feature show.
They bought five Charolais and four Simmentals.
The 23 month-old Kindara Captain Jack son measured 988 kilograms, 9mm rum and 5mm rib fat, and 130 sq cm eye muscle area.
Victorian stud Waterford Charolais, Mount Macedon, won most successful exhibitor and their ribbons included junior female and male.
Both were sired by Palgrove Hermes.
The junior champion bull weighed 618kg, and measured 9mm rump, 6mm rib and 101sqcm.
The heifer was the first lot sold at the Charolais sale after the judging, and in front of a big crows it was eventually knocked down for Ron johnstone, Milford Charolais, Beaudesert, Queensland, for $14,000, via the online service Elite Livestock Auctions.
