Melbourne Royal Show

Some of the winners from the Royal Melbourne Show Sheep Competition, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Leigh Ellis, Sweetfield, Mt Moriac, Judge Darryl McDonald, and Bron Ellis, with the Supreme Champion Corriedale (ewe) Exhibit. Mr McDonald said she was a good barrelled ewe, with good points, and was just a beautiful sheep all round.

Judge Darryl McDonald, and Ian and Rae Christie, Garvald, Byaduk, with the Supreme Champion Lincoln (ram) Exhibit. Mr McDonald said the ram had beautiful wool, and proper masculine features for a Lincoln.

Judge Darryl McDonald, with Margaret and Colin Chapman, Woodhall, Wedderburn, with the Supreme Champion (ram) Dorset Down Exhibit. Mr McDonald said the ram was full of meat and stood on his feet and legs very correct.

Liz and Pete Russell, Tullamore Park, Donald, with their Supreme Champion Texel (ram) Exhibit and champion ewe. Mrs Russell said they were unsure whether they'd be able to return home as water from the Richardson River had been rising since Friday morning.

Alastair (front) and Graham Day, Allendale Studs, Bordertown, SA, with their Supreme Champion Suffolk (ram) Exhibit and reserve champion ram. Judge Andrew Scott, Valley Vista Poll Dorset Stud, said the ram was very smooth, with a good top line and great carcase.

Judge Andrew Scott and Nick Hewitt, Olsen Park Dorpers, Koondrook, with the Supreme Champion Dorper (ram) Exhibit. Mr Scott said the ram was a big, powerful sire.

John Voitin, Maladorn Dorper Stud, Deepdene, with his Supreme Champion White Dorper (ram) Exhibit. Judge Andrew Scott said the ram had a very good top line, and a nice muscly shape.

Matthew Sherwood and son Rex, Wollondale Hampshire Downs, Towrang, NSW, with their champion ewe and its lamb.

Jodie Cheyne, Lynview, Glenburn, and judge Anne Harrison, Garfield, with the Supreme Champion Black and Coloured (ewe) Exhibit. Ms Harrison said the ewe was amazing to handle, and had a beautiful fleece.

Graeme Dehnert, Fernhill Stud, Ballan, with his Supreme Champion Aussiedown Exhibit.

James Frost, Hillden, Bannister, NSW, judge Andrew Scott, and Ian Bucknall, Yaralla, Moolort, with the Supreme Champion (ram) Poll Dorset Exhibit. Mr Scott said it would be a tremendous sire.

Ologhlin stud principal Jason O'Loghlin, Deniliquin, NSW, with the supreme Wiltshire Horn exhibit and Ian Staritt, life councillor and life member of Victorian branch of ASSBA, and judge Greg Good.

Judge Ian Cameron, Nundoone stud, Narromine, NSW, with Jeff Sutton, Wattle Farm, Temora NSW with the champion Border Leicester ewe that went onto win supreme exhibit of the breed.

Roger Wilkinson, Wangoom, and Leslie Brewer with his champion Cheviot ram. The one year-old ram won the first of the Cheviot showing at the Royal Melbourne since Mr Wilkinson last showed in 2006.

Judge Greg Good, Bowen Suffolk stud, Orange, NSW, and Alistair Day, Allendale, Bordertown, SA, and the supreme Suffolk-winning ram.

Rod McCartney, Yentrac stud, Tatura, won the most successful Southdown exhibitor.

Tintern Grammar won most successful Romney exhibitor.

Length and fleece coverage put Tintern Grammar’s champion ram above its competitors. The 116kg ram was led by Ashlea Cross. Pictured with judge Iam Cameron and ASSBA president Gavin Wall.

Champion Suffolk ewe with Deva Weitman, Blue Rock stud. Romsey. Judge Greg Good said its width across the loin was amazing. Deva said the 15 month-old ram was by Kurrali Washington, which had improved their ewes by adding more depth and muscle.
