PRICES were firm to dearer on heavy steers, with plenty of competition between restockers and processors at Bairnsdale on Friday.
In a plainer yarding, heifers were back $200 and a larger line of cow and calf units were easier in price.
There were more Friesian steers in the market than is usual for Bairnsdale, returning up to $1220; vendor Austin Dairy Farms, Orbost.
The top price of $1905 was paid for Hereford steers, 16-months-old, 582kg, vendor Shorland Fisheries, Orbost. A second pen of Angus steers, 488kg, same vendor, sold to $1700.
Orbost’s G Trewin sold 16mo Angus steers, 585kg at $1880; 463kg at $1500.
Two-year-old Hereford steers, 563kg, vendor estate A Norman, Wy Yung, sold at $1830. A second pen, 535kg, same vendor, sold at $1800.
A line of 2yo Angus steers, Black Mountain Station, sold to $1810 for a pen liveweight average 545kg. Gordon Whelan, Lakes Entrance, sold rising-2yo Angus steers, 497kg, to $1660, average $1650.
Gelantipy’s Neil Henderson sold 15mo Hereford steers, 401kg, $1660.
BJ&JM Missen, Gormandale, sold 14mo Angus steers, 462kg, $1640. Charolais steers, same vendor, 10-12mo, 374kg, sold to $1290.
Airley’s Jack Pedersen was very happy to receive $1600 for a pen of Hereford steers, 446kg.
D&C Williams, Flaggy Creek, sold 18mo Charolais and Angus steers to $1450.
The annual draft of Bindi Station 9-11mo Hereford weaner steers, Newcomen blood, sold to $1700, average $972, vendor John Armit and Penny and Fraser Barry, Bindi. Craig & Andrea Bush, Meerlieu, sold 8mo Angus steers to $1355. Mountain Cattle Co, Benambra, sold 12mo Hereford steers, $1000.
Weaner heifers sold to $1280, for 10mo Charolais and Red Angus females, vendor Johnson and Seawright, Heath Hill. Tom & Damien Ventry, Deddick Springs, sold 12mo Hereford and Black Baldy heifers to $1250.
G Allan, Lochiel, sold Hereford heifers, $1140.
Yearling Angus heifers sold to $1000, vendor Helen & Chris Nixon, Black Mountain Station. A pen of pregnancy-tested-in-calf Angus cows, vendor Chris Barrett, Orbost, sold at $1520.
Cows and calves were easier in price, although a larger yarding than recent sales.
P Reefman, Calulu, sold rejoined Hereford cows with Black Baldy calves-at-foot, $1880. JT&JA Vardy, Meerlieu, sent in Angus and Black Baldy pairs that sold to $1880. Scott & Michelle Atkinson, Broadlands, sold Angus units, $1860; Hereford pairs $1780; and Angus cow and calves, $1720.
