There are expected to be the best flows into Lake Hindmarsh since the 2010-11 floods following heavy rain across the Wimmera River catchment over the past week.
Key parts of the river’s catchment in both the Grampians and Pyrenees mountains have received over 50mm for the week to Tuesday with further significant falls expected Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.
The river in Horsham is running a banker with the weir near fully open.
There have already been some small in-flows into Lake Hindmarsh, the terminus of the Wimmera, but the water currently making its way downstream will be the most significant.
All the Wimmera’s major tributaries, including the Mt William Creek, the McKenzie River and Norton Creek are also running strongly,. contributing to the volume of water heading north.
