Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth, the Tablelands Regional Council, and commercial and farming representatives are whipping up support to gather signatures in the fight against a devastating weed.
The community has until Wednesday, August 24 to sign a petition regarding Navua sedge, which Mr Knuth will table in Parliament early in September.
It’s hoped the petition will help attract funding to research a long-term management plan for the weed, as well as a pilot program, and to continue funding to spray along roadsides.
“The Tablelands has done very well in the past in supporting petitions that have delivered results for the region, and carried real weight when negotiating outcomes for these areas,” Mr Knuth said.
“Navua sedge has a devastating impact on our beef and dairy industries; one paddock of sedge could render prime farming land completely useless,” he said.
Petitions are available at Mr Knuth’s office, Tablelands Regional Council customer service centres, libraries and various local businesses.
