WITH a good season taking shape in Western Victoria, ram sales have appear to have started strongly as well.
Monday saw nine studs offer 81 Merino rams offered with 78 sold to a top of $5500 at an average $1731, at their new sale venue at Balmoral.
After more than 20 years at Douglas, the sale started strongly with Lot 16 reaching the top price. Glendonald Merinos, Nhill, offered Glendonald M 352 19, a 15 month old H Pharoah son, with fleece measurements of 18.8 micron, 3.2 SD, 17.0 CV and 99.8 CF. Victoria Downs, Morven, QLD, purchased this ram with out seeing him in the flesh. Victoria Downs are repeat clients to Glendonald and love the consistency of their rams. John McGrath, Landmark Wool, purchased this new sire for the Roberts family and said he is the “complete package”.
“He has that crimpy wool we are after, good bone, long body and good skin, just the complete package” Mr McGrath said.
Graham Wells, formally “One Oak Merinos”, was the guest judge on the day, choosing the young sire as his Grand Champion Short Wool Ram. Andrew Sloane, Landmark Stud Stock said that people were hesitant about the move to the new venue, but the presentation of venue and sheep was outstanding.
“This venue has now set the scene for the next 20 years”. Mr Sloane said.
