THERE was a positive lift in returns at the Johnson family’s annual Carcuma North and Select three breed ram sale last week at Peake.
This included a 20 per cent lift in average and the Poll Merino top price of $3200 being more than double last year’s top, while the Poll Dorset and White Suffolk section also received a lift.
The 30 Poll Merinos on offer were “genuine wool cutters with great definition and nourishment” said Elders auctioneer Tom Penna. The 18 sold averaged $917.
Long-time supporters, the Heym family, Peake, of Sharon, Kenton, Damien and Stewart (pictured above) paid the Poll Merino top price.
Lot 1 – CN004 – was the sale topper, carrying impressive 18.9 micron wool with 99.6 per cent comfort factor.
The Heym family bought four rams averaging $1650.
This sale marked the 60th year of Poll Dorset breeding by the Johnson family.
It was then fitting that Neville and Kevin Heintze, Murrayville, were the sale’s volume buyers with six Poll Dorset rams to $800, averaging $600. They are the Select stud’s longest continual buyers, having bought their first rams 20 years ago.
But they were beaten for the top price Poll Dorset by Darren Schmidt, Lameroo, who paid $850 for two rams.
The eight Poll Dorsets that sold averaged $663.
The 12 White Suffolk rams offered all found homes, selling to $105, averaging $675.
The $1050 top price was paid by Paul Carling, Parrakie, for two rams, having bought a Poll Merino earlier at $800.
Matt Fiebig, Keith, bought four averaging $725, and a Poll Merino at $1000.
The sale was conducted by Elders and Landmark.
