Colac
Angus steers to $1360
Angus heifers to $1110
Angus cows and calves to $2240
STEERS were up to $100 dearer on July prices at last week’s Colac store sale, according to the town’s Stock Agents Association president Matt Nelson.
A yarding of 550 cattle saw prices passing the 450c/kg mark, for a range of breeds supplied by local producers.
“I think the sale went very well, considering the quality of the cattle and the number there,” Mr Nelson said.
“There are not a whole lot of cattle about, throughout the whole state, and a bit of rain has set people up pretty well for the season.
“People are getting in a bit earlier than I would have expected.”
He said local sellers and buyers were most active in the market, with heavier Angus steers going for up to 380c/kg.
Mr Nelson said among the higher sales were a pen of 249kg Murray Greys, which went for $1110, or 445c/kg.
He said 17 Angus steers, account Bailey, went for $1360, or 380c/kg.
Luke Buchanan, Irrewarra, sold 17, 222kg 10-11 month-old Hereford steers for $1050 or 473c/kg. He also received $910, or 320c/kg, for 11 Murdeduke blood 12-14 month old Angus heifers.
“When you start getting four dollars plus a kilogram, it is pretty good money,” Mr Nelson said.
John Evans received another good price for six 10 month-old, 258kg, Angus steers, that made 414c/kg.
Of the heifers, prices ranged from $1110 for Angus-cross 335kg, 12-13 month-old heifers, account Bailey, to $610.
A pen of four two and a half year-old Avondale Angus cows and calves went for a top of $2240.
Geoff Higgins sold 30 Rockgrove Angus cows with one to two month old calves at foot for the category top of $2000.
Charles Stewart Dove agent Terry Dove said buyers would have to get used to higher prices.
“Putting it purely and simply, it is supply and demand,” Mr Dove said.
“We still have spring in front of us, with no feed around yet.”
