Prime bullocks sold to more than $2800 at Leongatha, last Wednesday, and this aided stronger demand for replacements. Yearling steers, which weighed up to the mid 500 kilogram liveweight range, sold to a top of $1820.
G Charlton, Leongatha, sold nine prime Hereford steers for this figure, but several smaller lots of yearlings sold between $1330 and the top price.
KM&GA Couper, Mardan, sold 16 steers, 408-557kg, from $1330-$1810.
All of the better bred yearling steers sold to strong competition from feedlots to bullock fatteners with liveweight prices equalling 345-375c/kg.
The yarding of 1400 head reverted back to a more traditional offering, which included a number of Friesian, and dairy cross steers. and a few heifers.
Numerous pens of better bred steers sold very well, but the strength of the sale was for lines of well bred steers, which attracted excellent competition.
Anderstoney, Kilcunda, sold a line of 77 medium to light-medium weight (366-425kg) yearling Angus steers, by Yancowinna and Te Mania bulls. These sold from $1290-$1580, or 372-398c/kg. Teys Bros was the effective buyer here, for their Charlton feedlot.
A feature draft of 68 Angus steers (231-301kg), Yancowinna and Lawson’s bld, offered by D&B Kalladay, Gelliondale, sold for $1085-$1200, or 400-470c/kg lwt.
R&K Telling, Woodside, sold 65 Angus steers (216-312kg) from $940-$1240, or 415-463c/kg lwt. K&N Reid, Outtrim, sold 27 Charolais steers from $1195-$1340.
This shows the strength of the sale of all steers of better breeding, across the yarding.
Phelan & Henderson & Co, said they sold 255 steers for an average of 405c/kg lwt, which was a great result.
Demand was solid for the dairy steers penned too. Yanakie Farms sold 57 Friesian steers from $690-$770, and D&C Latham, Fish Creek, 16 Friesian steers, 400kg lwt, for $1050. This was a direct result of the very good prices the previous day.
Competition gained strength in the heifer sale, as producers and feedlots attempted to buy heifers at lower liveweight prices. While this is and was the case, prices were very good.
YQ Australia Pty Ltd, sold 48 yearling Angus heifers from $1240-$1310, 329-351c/kg lwt.
Campaspe Flats, Berry’s Creek, sold 12 Red Angus heifers in plain store condition, for $1030, and many sales were noted over $1000.
Oztrust Grazing Co, Talgarno, sold 20 Angus heifers to $1490 to top the sale.
Nicholls & McNee, Stradbroke, sold 14 Angus heifers, $1010-$1220, and Katelea Pastoral, Glen Alvie, 21 Angus, Limousin and Angus-Limousin heifers from $1050-$1190, all to feedlots.
D&H Wyhoon sold 25 Angus-Limousin heifers from $750-$895. being the path of most lighter weights.
