BIG questions will be asked at this year’s Victorian Farmers Federation conference.
Next week’s annual meeting will address the 14 resolutions, raised throughout the day.
The resolution of a concrete threshold to foreign investment in agricultural land and water is one example that is predicted to cause a heated debate.
VFF President Peter Tuohey said foreign investment was one of the most contentious issues in agriculture.
“The VFF has always stated that Australians need to know who owns our land and water,” he said.
“Some farmers have argued for a threshold on how much agricultural land foreign investors can own.”
While the Federal Government has set limits on foreign investment in banks, shipping, airlines and communications, Mr Tuohey’s questioned the method of restricting foreign investment in land and water.
“How do we distinguish between agricultural and non-agricultural?” he said.
“It’s a complicated issue.”
The VFF acknowledged the many opinions on foreign investment with plans to address the resolution at length on Thursday, July 21 and Friday, July 22.
The conference will be held at Rydges, 186 Exhibition St in Melbourne.
