The future was looking brighter for Lincoln sheep, according to the only breeder to exhibit at this year’s Australian Sheep & Wool Show.
Garvald, Byaduk, was the only stud, which brought animals to the Bendigo event.
But co-principal Rae Christie said a former stud had recently re-registered.
“Lincolns are probably not worth a million dollars, but they are worth a million dollar genetically, for people just to keep running them on,” Ms Christie said.
“There is another stud, which has been deregistered, which is coming back on, so we are really pleased and excited, we are really excited to get these folk back in.
“They are a great breed, they are just different, they have great attitude, wonderful mothers, do well in the cold weather, with wool like this, but there is not a lot of market for it.”
While the wool was too prickly for clothing, it made good mats and wall hangings, and even dolls wigs.
Judge Roger Wilkinson, Wangoom, said the Lincoln was a “deceptive sheep, which was easy to dismiss.
“But when you get your hands on them they are really solid in the frame, you can feel the muscle on them, they are very woolly,” Mr Wilkinson said.
“Once you get your hands in, past the wool, you can feel a real, solid frame on them, they are really impressive like that.”
Mr Wilkinson said he chose the older ram, over two and a half years, as the champion.
“He’s not that much bigger than the younger ram, but he’s squarer, and good, broad muscle on him.”
