Western Australian Dorper stud Kaya has again tasted success at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show (ASWS), winning all the major categories in the White Dorper ram section.
The Narrogin stud won Junior, Senior and Grand Champion, at the National Dorper and White Dorper Show, which is part of the ASWS, with its rams.
But stud principal Adrian Veitch said the competition was becoming tougher.
“We have had a really strong class this year, basically all the rams go back to the one bloodline, so its been really good, it’s a proven bloodline and it’s worked really well,” Mr Veitch said.
This year, the June drop Kaya 140231, with 7mm of fat, 46mm of muscle was crowned Grand Champion.
The rams came from Kaya 123, which was sold at Dubbo in 2012, for $14,000.
“It’s his sons, and quite a few seconds, which weren’t mine, were also his bloodline, so he has done an exceptional job.”
He said he had 18 doses of semen left, from 090123, so there were still more animals to come.
“I reckon it’s getting tougher, but we have probably got numbers, which makes a big difference, I can do a lot of my own embryo transfers, and I am also doing a lot of performance breeding, so we are getting the animals which are performing well, but also looking okay, so that’s the plan.”
The west had a “beautiful season” and the sheep had not lost condition, on the trip across.
Last year, Kaya brought 13 rams to the show
It took out Grand Champion ram and Supreme White Dorper exhibit with Kaya 140297.
