Nareeb Nareeb Partnership has won the Victorian Merino Pair of the Year, the first prize to be awarded for the breed at the 2016 Australian Sheep & Wool Show.
Judge Kip Gray, manager of the Stockman stud in Tasmania, said the decision to put the Nareeb Nareeb Fine/Medium wool, August shorn pair ahead of the Wurrook entry was not unanimous.
He said the Nareeeb Nareeb pair’s structural presence and bulk tipped them over the scale for the win.
Nareeb Nareeb stud overseer Gerard Meulendyks said although the ram and ewe came from different bloodlins, they matched up very well in terms of their wool type and how much wool they’ll cut.
Onlookers remarked on their long staples and good coverage.
“When it comes to shear the ram, I think he’ll shear about 20 kilograms,” Mr Meulendyks said.
