Farmers are reminded that their workers were due a pay rise from July 1.
Maddens Lawyers employment-law expert Jane Blackburn said the pay rise was mandatory and determined by the experience, qualifications and responsibilities of the employee.
“The impact of not complying can be very expensive,” she said.
“It’s not something that can be brushed aside.”
Ms Blackburn said the increase applied to a diverse range of employees and farming businesses under the Pastoral Award (2010).
Ms Blackburn said it was up to employers to know and pay the correct wage rate.
She urged farmers to consult with an experienced adviser to ensure compliance and avoid penalty.
“It’s complex,” she said. “Getting another perspective on this detail can be the difference between peace of mind and a hefty fine.”
