Long serving Colac agent Roy Harlock has severed a 90-year family connection with the south-west saleyards taking up an appointment with South Australian agency firm, SAL at Kingston.
Following in the footsteps of father Tom Harlock who worked for 50 years as a dairy specialist with JG Johnston & Co, Roy Harlock joined JG Johnston as a 16 year-old before its takeover by Elders, moving to Dove & O’Brien Livestock and then back to JG Johnston when ownership of the business returned to former Johnston’s employee, Tony Hickey.
Spending the past five years with Landmark, Roy remembers fondly the business he conducted with southwest dairy “legend” Eddie Martin who bought 5000 dairy cows annually from local markets and recycled them from his property north of Colac saleyards.
“He would class, pregnancy test and re-sell at least 100 cows each week and have most of them sold before they were advertised,” Roy said of Mr Martin’s connections in dairy.
