VICTORIA has shivered through one of the coldest June weeks in history, with several centres recording their coldest June day on record last Friday.
Portland, Warrnambool and Horsham were among the record breakers, with the mercury reaching just 8.8 degrees in normally sunny Horsham, with the mercury hovering around 5 degrees there for most of the day.
The snow level plummeted accordingly with falls recorded down as low as 350 metres in the Otways around Erskine Falls near Lorne and widespread falls above 500 metres.
There were also reports of snow settling on the ground in notoriously cold Ballarat, while peaks in mountain ranges in the west of the state, such as the Grampians, the Pyrenees and the Macedons all recorded snow.
The higher peaks of the Alpine areas received solid snowfall as the ski season kicks into full gear.
The cold snap was part of a vigourous cold front that crossed the state on Thursday.
Conditions remained very cold over the weekend.
There is little relief forecast for the week ahead, with further cold fronts expected Thursday and Friday, although the snow level is expected to rise to above 1200 metres.
